Another game where the Tring management team scratch their heads and wonder what they have to do to buy some luck!
Bovingdon were the visitors to Icknield Way on what can only be called as a horrible weather day. It did not stop raining but the pitch was in excellent condition and was unaffected.
Another goalkeeper change today, Bailey Marshall-Rogers made his debut, the 16 year old was called in on Saturday morning to replace Joshua Ameganvi who was missing with injury. The 16 year old would go on to have a brilliant 1st team debut between the sticks narrowly missing out on man of the match to the returning Ben Sims.
The first half was very much even. Both sides didn't really create a big chances and most of the play was in the Bovingdon half who kept possession well whilst Tring looked solid throughout. The opening and only goal of the game came from probably the best move of the match. Bovingdon moved the ball from left to right at the back before a first time ball was played over the top and Sidney Gueye got the beating of Ben Jenkins and managed to scramble the ball past Marshall-Rogers in the goal who got a hand to it. 0-1. That would be the last meaningful play of the half and Bovingdon would see out the last 2 minutes of the half.
The 2nd half began and Tring were at it from the off, controlling large parts of the pitch and not conceding a shot on goal all half. Unfortunately, clear cut chances were few and far between and Bovingdon defended their goal with resilience. Matthew Hatt had the best opportunities when firstly Dan Hill kept the ball in while all the Bovingdon players stopped and he unselfishly squared the ball to Hatt who saw his close range effort hit the bar. The management team were on their knees at how it didn't go in!
The final few moments became frantic, firstly, an off the ball incident saw the Bovingdon centre half shown a straight red for an alleged headbutt on Toby Bennett. Then with moments to go, the ball was in the Bovingdon net and Icknield Way erupted only for the assistant's flag to be raised for offside. Jacob Hutchinson combined with Jake Plumridge down the right hand side and Hutchinson delivered a brilliant near post ball which was met on the volley by Hatt and the keeper could do nothing apart from see it nessle in the top corner. Celebrations were evidently short-lived. The points would go to the away side.
Head Coach Jamie Roberts: "Emotions ran high today, we have been desperate to get some sort of points on the board of late, especially with a good run of games at home. The frustration could be seen. I remained as calm as possible throughout the game because I was delighted with what I saw from the lads. They did everything I asked and more! We just couldn't find an equaliser. The shape was superb and the communications and movement was really pleasing, upmost the desire was back! We are feeling the pressure as a management team at the moment but are trusting the process and things will turnaround. Special mention to Ben Sims today who was excellent on his return and really stoked the fire in the team's belly. Plus young Bailey in goal, what a mature debut from a 16 year old. One of the best i've ever seen. He should be proud!"
