Welcome to the website of GOVAN ATHLETIC FOOTBALL CLUB. The club was established in 2001 by Jack Norbury, with help from Simon Bancroft, Phil Norbury and Grant Hood.

The story behind the team name, Govan, is that inspired by Sir Alex Ferguson's Autobiography, Jack decided to form a team using the name of Fergie's birthplace. GOVAN ATHLETIC FC played their first season in the Stockport Football League (South Manchester), where they finished runners-up in the 2001/02 season.

We now have two teams established in the Manchester Football League, and a third team playing in the Lancashire and Cheshire league. We play our home games at the superb facilities provided at the Platt Lane Complex. We train 2-3 times a week in the summer, and on Wednesday nights, 8pm-10pm at Platt Lane, during the season.

In the founding days the club were initially sponsored by the Foresters Arms on Sandy Lane, Romiley. The former landlord, David Diggle, was extremely helpful through both his enthusiasm and financial support. The current home base for the club after matches is the Spread Eagle Pub in Chorlton.

Govan Athletic has spent the last twenty years building a reputation as a club that is always looking to progress, to grow and to build an exceptional group of members that want to join us on the journey of making something special. We have established a name as a well-run, friendly and ambitious club and over the last few seasons the partnership with superb sponsors is allowing work to continue apace.

The committee of the club are committed to creating an organisation that can be the very best it can be, both on the pitch and in the community. We look to build strong relationships with local, community based sponsors and endeavor to pass that goodwill onto charities and local initiatives in the area.
