This week's news piece for the Holderness Gazette...
Ahead of Tuesday night’s final league game of the season at Bridlington Town Reserves, Easington United’s new first team manager was introduced to his players.
Karl Atkin is the latest man to be tasked with getting the club’s results on the field to match the quality of the surroundings in which they play.
His appointment was set to be ratified at Wednesday’s committee meeting, with Atkin becoming the first incumbent of the post to come with no previous affiliation to the club.
Having played for Hall Road Rangers and Reckitts, the incoming boss has previously enjoyed stints as assistant manager to Martin Thacker at Hall Road before managing AFC Rovers in the East Riding County League, and latterly at East Riding Rangers in the Humber Premier League.
Atkin had already taken in several first team games as a spectator, prior to the 2-1 defeat at Bridlington in which two individual errors (on 10 minutes and 12 minutes) proved costly, despite a rousing second half rally in which Liam Murrey halved the deficit.
Although nothing is certain until the annual allocation meeting, the result (which also saw the Seasiders clinch second place and promotion to the Humber Premier League) confirmed a bottom two final placing for Easington and leaves them facing the distinct possibility of relegation.
This followed Saturday’s thumping at the Dransfield Stadium where the Eastenders had no answer to an in-form North Ferriby side that climbed into the top four on the back of a 5-1 win.
Despite the uncertainty over the team’s immediate future, Atkin says he is “excited” about working with what he termed “a great group of a people” at a “great club” with a “fantastic set-up”.
Elsewhere last weekend, the reserves ended their two-game losing streak at home with a gutsy comeback win over East Riding Rangers Reserves.
The stiffs host Bridlington Rovers 1903 at Low Farm this Saturday in their penultimate home game, with the final Farm fixture to follow next Wednesday when Reckitts Reserves are the visitors.
For the thirds there’s a dress rehearsal of the upcoming Harold Robinson Cup Final in store at Patrington, with the visit of Division 3 champions Priory.
Last Saturday also saw the girls victorious at Low Farm; their 6-2 win over AFC Tickton Titans maintained third position in the East Riding Girls U15 Division, a finish they can confirm with victory at home to Springhead Falcons on Saturday.
Millie C stole the show with a hat-trick, Emme bagged a brace and there was also a goal for Harriet.
On Sunday Low Farm played host to its third game of the weekend when the Awd Ezzies salvaged a point at home to Priory in a 3-3 draw in the Hull & District Vets League Division 6. The locals have one game left to play, away at Hedon Rangers B (details still tbc).
